One of the biggest transfers in football history took place on Tuesday when Paris Saint-Germain confirmed that they had signed Argentina icon, Lionel Messi on a two-year deal with an option to extend it by another year.
Messi left Barcelona after 21 years after the club management announced that they would not be able to offer the 34-year-old a new contract despite the player agreeing to take a 50 percent pay cut in order to seal the deal.
PSG wasted no time in swooping for the record six-time Ballon d’Or award winner and it looks like it has already paid off as following the signing the club released the footballing icon’s new shirts on their website, but they have already sold out in “record time”.
Messi has chosen to wear the No.30 shirt at PSG, instead of the customary No.10 he wore for the majority of his Barcelona career and these shirts were reportedly released on PSG’s online store following the announcement, and both Messi’s home and away jerseys sold out in under 20 minutes.
While it remains unknown on how many shirts were available for sale, the shirts were sold out in under 20 minutes despite being priced at €107.99 (£92) a piece. In addition to the impact that Messi will bring on the field, his arrival also brings a number of sponsorship opportunities for the club in terms of revenue.
